AREAS IN CHENNAI


ADYAR
Adyar or Adayar is a large neighbourhood in south Chennai (formerly Madras), Tamil Nadu, India. It is located on the southern banks of the Adyar River. It is bounded by the Buckingham Canal to the west, Tiruvanmiyur to the south, and Besant Nagar to the east. Sub-localities of Adyar include: Gandhi Nagar, Kasturba Nagar, Nehru Nagar, Indira Nagar, Padmanabha Nagar, Bhaktavatsalam Nagar, Parameshwari Nagar, Jeevaratnam Nagar, Shastri Nagar, Karpagam Gardens and Arunachalapuram. The centre of this neighbourhood runs along the Sardar Patel Road, Chennai, between Gandhinagar(north) and Kasturbai Nagar(south). 


AMBATTUR
Ambattur is a major municipality in Thiruvallur district. It is an industrial area north-west of Chennai. Though considered a part of Chennai for all practical purposes, Ambattur technically belongs to the Tiruvallur district. Closer to Padi and Avadi, Ambattur is a fast developing residential localĂ© of Chennai. It covers an area of 45 km².


ANNA NAGAR
Anna Nagar is a residential neighbourhood in the metropolitan city of Chennai (Madras), India. It is in west Chennai and the areas to the west of Anna Nagar are some of the fastest developing parts of the city.[citation needed] It has always been a smart and affluent suburb, but more recently, in addition to being a popular residential area, Anna Nagar has also become a busy commercial and educational center.

Anna Nagar was developed by the Tamil Nadu Housing Board in the early 1970s following the World Trade Fair in the area in 1968. The board developed residential plots, apartments, commercial complexes, wide roads, school zones, bus terminus and large parks.

AYANAVARAM
Ayanpuram or Ayanavaram is one of the many localities of Chennai and is located in West Chennai about 8 kilometres from the city center. The Konnur High Road, one of the important connecting roads in Chennai runs through Ayanavaram. Ayanavaram is one of the peripheral commercial areas of Chennai.


CHROMEPET
Chromepet is a township in the southern part of Chennai, India. It lies on the Grand Southern Trunk (GST) Road, close to Tambaram and next to Pallavaram, Well connected by Road and Railways. It is 4 km south of the Anna International Airport, Meenambakkam. It is also the home of the Madras Institute of Technology, the institute where Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, former president of India, Tamil writer Sujatha and many other technocrats studied.

EGMORE
Egmore is one of the busiest neighbourhoods of Chennai (Madras), Tamil Nadu, India. Government Museum (Chennai) founded in 1851 is located in Egmore. Egmore is served by the Chennai Egmore railway station. Egmore is the Anglicized form of "Ezhumbur" the name of a pre-British era village situated on the northern banks of the River

Despite the fact that Egmore had been a part of the East India Company's possessions since 1720, it was not until the "Golden age of British rule" stretching from 1858 to 1947 that Egmore witnessed some real growth.The Egmore Museum was one of the first notable monuments to be constructed here.The construction of this famous landmark was undertaken immediately after the Sepoy Mutiny of 1857.The Connemara Library was created as an annexure housing the Museum's vast book collection and became operational in 1896.
Egmore, in 1796, was the site of the Military Male Orphan Asylum near Madras. This asylum was headed by Andrew Bell, who invented the Madras System for schooling there.

The Egmore railway station is the second most important in the state of Tamil Nadu after the Chennai Central Railway Station.It was constructed in 1908 and functioned as the headquarters of the now-defunct Madras and South Mahratta Railway till 1951.

KILPAUK
Kilpauk  is a small commercial township located in Chennai, the capital city of the state of Tamil Nadu, India. The distance from Chennai's city center to Kilpauk is about 6 km. The region is situated off the Ponamallee High Road in the west. Adjacent suburbs of Kilpauk include Chetpet, Egmore, Anna Nagar and Purasawalkam.

The nearest railway station for Kilpauk is the one at Chetpet. This railway station lies to the south of Kilpauk and not more than a kilometre away. The Chennai Airport is about 18 km from Kilpauk. This place was cantonment area for British troops before India's independence.

Enterprises dealing with the manufacturing of packaging materials, wood carvings, chemical suppliers, cement exporters and suppliers, have their bases in the locality. Besides being a commercial hub, the region also supports the local population. The place provides some of the best residential apartments in the city. The tree covered avenues and low pollution levels compared to other parts of the city, make Kilpauk a preferred destination.

K K NAGAR
KK Nagar (shortened from Kalaignar Karunanidhi Nagar) is a small township located in the southern part of Chennai, India. This is situated west of Ashok Nagar and the Chennai Airport is around 5 km south of this place. KK Nagar was a locality developed in the 1970s and early 1980s. KK Nagar is roughly 5 km² in area. KK Nagar is organized by sectors and streets, and there are 15 sectors, and around 102 streets.


KOYAMBEDU
Koyambedu is a locality in the South Indian city of Chennai. The Koyambedu area has become a major hub of activity in Chennai City after the inauguration of the market and the bus terminus. The area is active 24 hours in a day owing to the movement of people and goods through the day.


MEENAMBAKKAM
Meenambakkam is a town in Kancheepuram district in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu. The Chennai International Airport Cargo Terminal is situated here. It has access to other parts of the city through suburban trains and buses. It also has a splendid hillock nearby.

AAI (Airports Authority of India, earlier Civil Aviation Colony) Quarters is located in Meenambakkam. It houses around 200 families. Durga Pooja, Ayyappa Pooja, Sri Rama Navami are conducted in the Community Hall located in the colony. The Colony is close to the Meenambakkam Domestic terminal, flying club and the Meenambakkam International airport. There are two schools in the colony--the Civil Aviation Middle school providing Grades 1 through 8, and the Little Flower Nursery School. Both cater to the needs of parents residing in Meenambakkam, Palavanthangal and Nanganallur. The Civil Aviation Middle school's medium of instruction is Tamil with English as a 2nd language taught from Grade 3, while the Littler Flower Nursery School's medium of instruction is English only. The colony is also close to the Jain College in Meenambakkam. At walking distance from the colony, are two intra-city electric train stations (Meenambakkam and Palavanthangal), providing further access to other schools and colleges to the residents of the colony.

MYLAPORE
Mylapore is the cultural hub, and a bustling neighborhood, in the southern part of Chennai (formerly Madras) city, the capital of Tamil Nadu, India. Earlier Mylapore used to be called as Vedapuri.

Mylapore is a major commercial center, and one of the oldest residential parts of the city. It is well-connected by roads and Metro railway network, MRTS. It is famous for its tree-lined avenues, the famous 7th century Kapaleeswarar Temple, its kutcheri season and Ramakrishna Math.

NUNGAMBAKKAM
Nungambakkam is one of the wealthiest localities in the heart of Chennai, India's fourth largest metropolitan city. The neighborhood is abound with multi-national commercial establishments, important government offices, foreign consulates, sprawling educational institutions, shopping malls, sporting facilities, tourist spots, star hotels, restaurants, and cultural centers. Nungambakkam is also a prime residential area in Chennai. The adjoining regions of Nungambakkam include Egmore, Chetput, T. Nagar, Kodambakkam, Choolaimedu and Kilpauk.

PERAMBUR
Perambur is a locality in Northern part of the metropolitan city of Chennai, Tamil Nadu state, India. Though the nomenclature source of Perambur is not apparently known, it is widely regarded as a place which used to be a bamboo forest a few hundred years ago, around the Huzur Gardens area, which currently houses the Simpsons Pvt. Ltd,. In Tamil, "Perambu" means bamboo and "oor" means city or place. It is located 4 km from Chennai Central station.
This area was annexed to Chennai in 1742 AD.[1]


PORUR
Porur is a suburb of the city of Chennai in Tamil Nadu, India. It is a town panchayat in the Poonamallee taluk of Thiruvallur district of the Indian state of Tamil Nadu. Occupying a crucial position on the Mount-Poonamallee Road, Porur is known for its chemical industries and manufacturing plants, residential colonies and vegetable market.

Porur is of great antiquity and is believed to have been existent since the Pallava period. It was upgraded from a village panchayat to a town panchayat on October 1, 1977. It is one of the fast-developing suburbs of Chennai.

Porur is situated at an elevation of 15 metres above sea level and is bounded on the east and south-east by the Pallavaram Hills. The Porur Lake is the principal source of fresh water for the suburb. Porur is internationally known for the Ramachandra Medical College campus which is situated here. 

PUZHAL
Puzhal is a town in Thiruvallur district in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu. The town is well known for [Puzhal central prison].Puzhal is located on the banks of Red Hills Lake. 


PURASAIWALKAM
Purasawalkam also known as Purasaiwalkam or Purasai, is a residential area and shopping district in Chennai in the state of Tamil Nadu, India. It is near both of the Chennai railway stations, Chennai Central and Egmore. Purasawalkam is considered a perfect mixture of commercial and residential hub.

Thana Street, in the heart of Purasawalkam, is one of the busiest streets in Chennai. It is famous for its jewelry and pharmacies. It also features a busy grocery market.

Abirami Mega Mall, one of the main attractions in Purasawalkam, is a cineplex including four main theaters and many shopping outlets.[1]

There are also many textile showrooms, including Madhar Sha, Sree Krishna, Textile India, and Ranjanas.


ROYAPETTAH
Royapettah is a centrally located suburb in the city of Chennai, India. It is situated to the west of the famous Marina Beach of Chennai. The locality features one of the developed commercial centers lying adjacent to the Chennai city center.

The locality houses Goudiya Math, an imposing temple structure that makes up one of the popular attractions in the region. Some other attractions located in the vicinity of Royapetah include Parthasarathy Temple and Aamir Mahal. Both of these attractions are housed in the adjacent Triplicane suburbs and at a walking distance from Royapetah.

Due to the close proximity of Royapetah to the city center, the place witness a great lot of activities, mostly commercial, making the entire region one of the busiest places in the city. The township is a flourishing trade and commerce centre. The place features great many establishments encompassing educational institutes, hospitals, business houses, hotels and hospitals. Some reputed educational institutes located in the Royapetah include Queen Mary's College, Lady Willington Training College, Vivekananda College.

Royapetah is provided with certain areas that are inhabited by people and thus form the residential places. Balaji Nagar and Gopalapuram constitute the popular residential areas in the township. There are also a couple of residential colonies like P&T Colony and Lloyds Colony. A number of hospitals and hotels provide services in these regions and beyond. Duraiswami Hospital, Forensic Medicine Hospital and Royapettah Government Hospital are popular institutes located here. Accommodation and catering facilities are provided by a number of budget hotels in the region.


SAIDAPET
Saidapet is an important neighbourhood in Chennai. The Saidapet Court, the only other court of judicature in Chennai city apart from the Madras High Court and the Saidapet bus depot are located here. Prior to its incorporation in Madras city, Saidapet functioned as the administrative headquarters of Chingleput district.
Saidapet was founded by the Nawabs of Carnatic in the 18th century AD and was named Sayyid Khan Pettah after Sayyid Khan, the army commander of the Nawab's forces. When the kingdom began to decline, Saidapet was occupied by the British East India Company and was made the administrative headquarters of Chingleput district.


TAMBARAM
Tambaram is an important division in the south west of Chennai city. Tambaram is about 25 kilometres from the city center and is connected by major roadways and railways. The Great Southern Trunk Road and Southern Railways provide access into the region. A number of small townships have been developed along these road and rail links. Tambaram as a division occupies great territorial lands in the south of the city. The rail and road links that come from the city proceed further south and into the region of Chengalpattu, a district of Tamil Nadu. Tambaram is further connected to the south east regions and the adjoining district of Mammalapuram by Velachery Road. The place is also known for providing numerous educational facilities. Tambaram is spread over a good land area. The major road and railway head that comes from the Chennai city bisects the region into Tambaram East and Tambaram West. The entire region forms an important trade and commercial centre in the South Chennai. Chromepet and Pallavaram are two renowned district suburbs in the Tambaram division. The division houses many important establishments encompassing colleges and schools, hospitals, banks, worshipping places, etc. Some important establishments in the region are given as Schools: Some important schools in both East and West Tambaram include Vidyalaya Valmigi Street, Seetha Devi Garodia School, Govt. TEYNAMPET
Teynampet is one of the busiest commercial localities of the city of Chennai, India. Neighbouring localities include Alwarpet, T. Nagar, Nandanam, and Nungambakkam. Teynampet is along Anna Salai, the arterial road of Chennai. Teynampet derives its name from Thennam and pettai (Place of coconut trees) due to the coconut groves that once existed there.


T NAGAR
Thyagaraya Nagar (also spelled Tyagaraya Nagar, and abbreviated T. Nagar) is a large, primarily commercial, locality in Chennai, India. It is situated in the middle of the city, south-west of the Anna Flyover. It is named after Sir P. Thyagaraya Chetty, whose Justice Party was in power when the settlement was laid out. The place is an important centre for shopping and entertainment, and also a major hub for the intra-city bus service.


TRIPLICANE
Triplicane situated about a half km from the Bay of Bengal coast and Fort St George, is one of the oldest central business districts of Madras (Chennai), South India. Triplicane owes its name to its Puranic existence as Tiruvallikeni or Tiru-Alli-Keni (Sacred Lily Pond in Tamil) denoting the pond in front of the famous Parthasarathy Temple located there. The place was also referred to as Vrundha-raNyam (beautiful garden) in Puranic scriptures.


VADAPALANI
Vadapalani (meaning 'Northern Palani') is one of the main hubs of Chennai, India. It is a busy suburb, thanks to the Lord

Muruga temple and its proximity to T. Nagar (the Shopping District of Chennai) and Kodambakkam (the Film Capital of the South). Vadapalani is also close to Guindy (6 km) and Koyambedu (4 km). It is well connected to all suburbs in Chennai and outlying areas has it own bus terminus. Many of the older movie studios on the Arcot Road have been pulled down and huge multi-storeyed buildings housing apartments and office complexes have been built in their place.


VELACHERRY
Velachery is surrounded by IIT Madras in the north-east, Taramani in the east and Adambakkam in the northwest; other neighbouring areas include Madippakkam, Guindy, Adyar and Thiruvanmiyur. Most of the neighbourhood is populated with houses. As more and more IT parks are emerging on the Old Mahabalipuram road, IT & working-class people are settling in Velachery. Velachery is one of the fastest developing areas in chennai.
