Spurned man kills woman, stabs himself

CHENNAI: A woman software employee was stabbed to death by her lover in full public view at Broadway bus terminus on Tuesday morning. He later stabbed himself and is battling for life at the Government General Hospital.

Police said S Karthika (20) of Okkiyam Thoraipakkam had come to Parrys to see her friend when Raja (27) of Thiruvottiyur came to meet her at 9.45am. Karthika was in love with Raja, an employee of a private firm, and their wedding was fixed in August with the consent of their parents. The wedding, however, was called off by the girl's parents who didn't find the man suitable.

An apparently enraged Raja tried to convince Karthika, but she would not listen to him.

Raja went to the bus terminus where Karthika was waiting, and confronted her. In a heated argument that ensued, he took out the knife hidden in his pocket and stabbed her. Before a crowd caught hold of him, he stabbed himself.

A police patrol vehicle took the two to the GH where the girl was declared brought dead. The man is in ICU. Esplanade police are investigating.
