Hunt on for mob that thrashed a 19-yr-old bike thief

CHENNAI: The police are hunting for members of a mob who brutally attacked a 19-year-old bike thief in Pudupet on Wednesday.

According to the police, the youth had stolen the bike parked outside a restaurant in Parrys three days ago. Immediately , the bike owner, Yusuff of Mannadi, came to Pudupet, the hub for for used automobile spare parts in the city. On Wednesday, Yusuff noticed the youth, later identified as R Dinesh , 19, of Bangalore, riding his brand new Yamaha and informed his friends.

They intercepted Dinesh and assaulted him. The youth abandoned the bike and began running, chased by Yusuff and his friends along with local shop owners and some of their employees. He rushed into a residence where he was cornered and thrashed again. He fainted.

By the time the Egmore police could come and rescue Dinesh , the mob, including Yusuff and his friends, had melted away.

He was taken to a private hospital and then to the Government General Hospital . Yusuff had taken away his bike without
lodging a complaint , the police said. According to the police, Yusuff on Monday last went to a restaurant on Armenian Street. When he came out, he found his bike missing. Some of his friends, who own shops in Pudupet , advised him to come there to see if his bike was there, ready to be sold as scrap. The Egmore police registered a case and launched a hunt for Yusuff and the mob that attacked Dinesh. A separate case was registered against Dinesh.

Dinesh, who came here from Bangalore a year ago, lived on a platform and stole bikes from parking lots and sold them in the Pudupet market , the police said. tnn
